The following example illustrates the financial problems facing today's families.

  • Married couple aged 35 who are planning on retiring at age 65.
  • His/Her annual salary is $48,000 a year ($4,000 a month).
  • Expected annual income increase 4%.
  • Expected annual inflation 4%.
  • Expect to live until age 80.

It would take monthly savings of $836 (4% rate) plus $2,000 deposited into an IRA to save enough money to live with monthly expenses equal to 75% of current levels. In other words they would have to save $1,002 a month or $12,024 a year to save enough to retire at age 65.

Realistically, what options does this couple have?

  • Both will have to work?
  • Simply never retire?
  • Get a better job?
  • Reduce their current spending and their standard of living?
  • Find another source of income?

They can also save taxes by having their own home business, but not many people are aware of this.

This is not an exceptional situation. Look at the report of The Bureau of Labor Statistics, it reveals that

out of 100 people who start working at age 25, by the age of 65 ...

    • 1% Are wealthy
    • 4% Have adequate capital for retirement
    • 3% Are still working
    • 63% Are dependent on Social Security, friends, relatives or charity
    • 29% are dead
